Why Your Attitude Matters More Than Your Skills - Your Career Intel

Why Your Attitude Matters mora Than Your Skills - Your Career IntelWhen it comes to recruiting the best job candidates, cash is one of the first things that comes to mind for most hiring managers. After all, if you cant pay a competitive salary, how can you ever expect to recruit and retain the best employees? And while compensation certainly plays a role in the hiring process, employers would be wise to think about KASH, too. KASH stands for Knowledge, Attitude, Skills and Habits four key elements to consider when evaluating a prospective hire. Its pretty easy to get a good overview of a prospective hires knowledge and skills from their resume and interviews. However, when we focus too much on knowledge and skills, we lose sight of attitude and habit the two biggest predictors of a new hires qualifikation.Consider this research shows that when new hires fail, 89% fail for attitude reasons, according to research from Mark Murphy, the author of Hiring for Attitude. Only 11% of new hi res fail because they lack a skill. Technical skills are certainly important, but theyre also much easier to assess. Skill proficiency tests cant measure a new hires openness to feedback, for example, or willingness to collaborate positively with teammates.Attitude Shapes Soft SkillsWe can change skill levels in training, but we cant change attitude. What exactly do I mean by attitude? Consider this potential hire a colleague recently considered as a prospective recruitOn paper, the potential new hire ticked all the boxes for experience, business acumen and intelligence. There was the Ivy League Degree, the prestigious MBA, the five years of experience at a leading strategic consulting firm. But in practice, if this hire has an authoritarian, hard-driving leadership style and is hired into a company where collaboration and camaraderie are paramount, theres a clear attitude dissonance that could lead to friction and poor job performance.Habits Matter, Too.Great habits drive great per formance. In todays job market, technical aptitude is easy to come by. Whats much harder to find, however, is a candidate with the right attitude and habits for your companys culture.Unfortunately, even as the focus on hiring has shifted away from technical proficiency and towards soft skills like coachability, the hiring process has not always kept up. In my next post, Ill share insights from my past work helping one of the largest telecom franchises in the nation refine their hiring process to value attitudes and habits as much as industry experience.

This CEO Says She Wont Hire a Job Candidate Who Doesnt Do These 4 Things

This CEO Says She Wont Hire a Job Candidate Who Doesnt Do These 4 Things Finding the perfect job can be tough, but theres a less often discussed aspect to filling a job position finding the perfect candidate. Even if applicants have the perfect tischset of qualifications and look great on paper, hiring prospects can completely collapse during an in-person vorstellungsgesprch.Fairygodboss co-founder Georgene Huang is an experienced interviewer. Not just in her current role as Fairygodboss CEO, but in her previous work as well.I first cut my teeth in what Ill describe as high-volume hiring in my role at Bloomberg Ventures, a new investment fund/incubator at Bloomberg LP, Huang said. We were starting to build new companies from scratch, starting with nothing more than a geschftlicher umgang plan or basic idea. One of the most important things we had to do was hire the initial CEO/senior leadership teams of these newly incubated companies. In order to get these companies running as quickl y as possible, Huang and her team went through intense interviewing periods. They interviewed people with different backgrounds one after another for a wide variety of leadership roles. Its interesting to meet new people and hear them present their best version of their professional selves, Huang said. Interviewing is not just fun, but for the purpose of making hires. So how do you become the kind of candidate employers want to hire? According to Huang, there are four key pieces to a great interviewPrepare.Know about the company, the position and have some follow up questions ready. Like Huang says prepare for your interview. Make sure you dont just apply to a role because you figure theres no downside.Be on time. Dont make a schwimmbad first impression by being late Per the old adage early is on time, on time is late and late is unacceptable.Bring a high level of energy. I wish candidates knew that they had to show enthusiasm and energy in their interviews, regardless of how talented and qualified they are, Huang said. People underestimate the impact of high energy presentations on the interviewers judgment of you.Follow-up with a thank you. Make sure you send a thank you note after the interview, complete with a meaningful note that references a clear point in the conversation. My dream interview is one in which the candidate is prepared, asks thoughtful questions and presents themselves in such a way that they are likely to make it to the next round, Huang said. It doesnt happen often, but sometimes someone walks in the door who really is a great fit both personally and professionally for the role and they are able to communicate all of that.Only apply to jobs you actually want and after you determine that your background and personality are a match for it, Huang said. If everyone did this, thered be a lot fewer bad interviews and wasted time both for candidates and interviewers.Candidates who perform badly in interviews, Huang says, tend to do so for the same few reasons. The candidate is poorly prepared, asks questions that are obvious or should be apparent from a quick internet search, Huang said. Its also really bad if they dont fit the job description qualifications very well or are rude and/or late. But dont worry you can fix a bad interview Figuring out some last-minute questions to ask your interviewer is always a good idea. If youre blanking on questions to ask about the job, you can about the application process.Always ask for information about the process if it seems like its more complex than you think it might be or taking a very long time relative to your expectations, Huang said. Maybe a prospective employer is going through a merger or corporate reorganization. That can sometimes slow hiring down or change the process mid-way.No matter how you look at it, interviews are tough for everyone regardless of what side of the table youre on. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and Huang says that its important t o make it count.People want to work with those that indicate they are very interested in them, Huang said. Dont waste a chance to make a good impression.
